The Value of Experience, Globally
Seniority in software engineering commands a premium in every market — but the size of that premium varies enormously. Our data across 38 cities shows that senior software engineers earn 35% more than entry-level counterparts in the US, while the premium is smaller in some European and Asian markets.
Where the Senior Premium is Largest
US markets show the largest absolute and percentage senior premiums:
- San Francisco: Senior earns $249,750 vs. Software Engineer $185,000 (+35%)
- New York: Senior earns $216,000 vs. $160,000 (+35%)
- Geneva: Senior earns CHF 189,000 vs. CHF 140,000 (+35%)
European Premium Structure
European markets generally show similar percentage premiums (around 35% per our dataset), but the absolute differences are smaller due to lower base salaries. A senior engineer in Berlin earns €110,700 vs. €82,000 for a regular engineer — a €28,700 premium vs. approximately $94,500 in San Francisco.
Japan: Seniority as Tenure
Japanese tech companies historically rewarded seniority through tenure-based pay rather than role-based premiums. This is changing as global companies enter the market, but traditional Japanese employers still offer smaller market-rate premiums than Western counterparts.
India: Rapid Salary Growth Curves
India's software engineering market shows the most dramatic career salary growth curves. Entry-level engineers start at relatively modest salaries (₹800,000–₹1,200,000), but top performers at senior levels can earn ₹3,000,000–₹5,000,000+ at major tech companies — representing 3–5x career growth that significantly exceeds the 35% "senior premium" our dataset shows.
Strategies to Maximize Your Senior Premium
- Job hop strategically: Staying at one company often means smaller raises than switching employers at the senior level
- Target equity-heavy companies: The senior premium at US public tech companies often comes more from RSU grants than base salary
- Build specializations: Senior engineers in AI/ML, distributed systems, and security command premiums above the standard 35%
- Consider geography: Moving from a market with a small senior premium to one with a large premium can represent a 20–50% total comp increase
